Fatal Lightning Strike on Mount Timpanogos
The Utah County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team responded Friday morning around 6:00 am to Mount Timpanogos after a group of hikers encountered a severe thunderstorm near the summit.
The group had reached the summit of Mount Timpanogos when a large thunderstorm moved into the area. As the storm approached, the hikers sought shelter inside a small structure located near the summit.
The structure was struck by lightning, resulting in multiple people being injured. A 19-year-old male sustained critical injuries and, despite efforts to render aid, was pronounced deceased.
Search and rescue personnel responded to the summit and worked with other responding agencies to provide medical assistance and evacuate those affected by the incident. Due to the location and severe weather conditions, the rescue operation presented significant challenges for responders.
The Utah County Sheriff's Office extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the young man who lost his life. We also recognize the efforts of the hikers and rescuers who assisted those who were injured during this incident.
Mountain Weather Safety
This tragic incident is also a reminder of how quickly weather conditions can change in the mountains. Thunderstorms can develop rapidly, and lightning can strike well away from the main area of rainfall.
The National Weather Service recommends that hikers check the weather forecast before beginning a hike and closely monitor changing conditions while on the mountain. If you hear thunder, you are close enough to the storm to be struck by lightning. Hikers should immediately move away from exposed ridgelines, peaks and other elevated areas and seek substantial shelter when possible.
Small structures such as sheds, shelters and similar buildings do not provide adequate protection from lightning. The safest locations are substantial, fully enclosed buildings or an enclosed, hard-topped vehicle.
For those hiking in the mountains, don't wait for the storm to arrive before making your way off exposed terrain.Build enough time into your hike to get to a safe location before thunderstorms develop or move into the area.
Additional information regarding this incident will be released as it becomes available and as family notifications and the investigation are completed.
