Utah County Sheriff's Deputies are responsible for safety and security of the court houses, Judges, staff and patrons of the court. Deputies are in charge of inmate management, safety, security and movement. Utah County Sheriff Deputies enforce the laws of the State of Utah and orders of the 4th District Court. Deputies will serve warrants as well as other criminal processes.

Deputies are there to serve and protect the public. The Sheriff’s Office is committed to help provide the people an open, fair, efficient, and independent system for the advancement of justice under the law.

The courthouse has 16 courtrooms and 13 judges with a bailiff assigned to each courtroom. The Provo courthouse has 8 District Judges, 3 juvenile judges and 2 commissioners.

Sergeant Vernal Shepherd - Court and Facility Security

The courthouse has two courtrooms 1 District Judge and 1 Juvenile Judge. Each courtroom has a bailiff assigned.


Things to know about going to the courthouse:

Entering the Courthouse:

Attire: Manor of dress should not deter you from attending your court date. The court is a formal setting. As such, it is recommended but not required to dress as you would for a more formal event; (i.e., Tank tops, shorts, pajamas, or other less formal clothing is not recommended.)

Security Checkpoint:

Each courthouse has a Security Checkpoint. Bags and patrons may be searched when entering the courthouse. This is to ensure the safety of the public and parties involved in cases within the courthouse. (Rule 3-414 UCJA)

Prohibited Items Include, but are not limited to:

  • Firearms
  • Edged weapons, scissors, and knives
  • Tools
  • Flammable liquids
  • Lighters
  • Vaping devices and/or Accessories
  • Tasers
  • Mace or Pepper Spray
  • Aerosol devices
  • Illegal Drugs
  • Handcuff keys
  • Any other item that a deputy can reasonably consider to be a weapon.

Photos & Recordings:

No photos or recordings are allowed in courtrooms without a Judges permission/order. It is prohibited to take photos or recordings of any security equipment. You can however take photos in public areas in the courthouse. (Rule 4-401.02. UCJA)
